DEDICATION OF THIS SECTION
In bars and pubs around the world, a gazillion beers (perhaps more) have been consumed while the drinkers have argued as to who is the "baddest of the bad" regarding special purpose units.
In my opinion, there's no contest...U.S. NAVY SEAL TEAMS...hands down
I do confess to be speaking from a viewpoint of 34 years in the U.S. Navy
so it's possible I might be just a little bit biased.

In any case, this section is dedicated to those wild and crazy guys whom I have admired and sailed with over the years aboard amphibious advance force ships (in which I served) and in Viet Nam.

Most especially for all who have been
U.S.S. PENSACOLA (LSD-38) SEALs
especially when I was XO then CO...this Bud's for you.

A SHORT UDT/SEALS HISTORY LESSON
DURING WWII ...the Navy established Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), popularly called "Frogmen", and their primary job was pre-assault recon of landing beach areas, clearing of underwater obstacles, etc. during advance force operations prior to an amphibious assault. They did eventually spend some time ashore in Europe, but that's another story. Here's what the emblems looked like.

THEN IN THE LATE 50'S/EARLY 60'S...
Unconventional Forces were getting presidential attention, not to mention a slice of the Department of Defense Budget. The Navy realized that a more versatile force with an expanded mission beyond the traditional UDT one was needed and and the SEAL (Sea-Air-Land) teams were born, the new name reflecting their new multi-faceted missions, which include infiltration and recon behind enemy lines, anti-terrorism, and other secret stuff, in addition to the amphibious assault advance forces mission mentioned above. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't simply a budgetary ploy...it's just that sometimes we Navy guys have to get a little tap on the head to start thinking about how we might do things better.

As a result, PRESENT DAY SEALs are a similar but different breed from the FROGMEN of WWII....in addition to the traditional UDT requirements of extraordinary physical endurance, never-give-up spirit, and disregard for personal safety that borders on the insane, today's SEALs have, additionally, to be extremely intelligent and extremely versatile. As one small example, each SEAL must be able speak at least one foreign language. Here's what the emblems look like.
